The Haitian Revolution with Professor Jean Lesly René

Thursday, December 4, 2025 14 Kislev 5786

7:30 PM - 9:00 PMZoom

CDT's Undoing Racism group invites all members of CDT to a special three-part series on the Haitian Revolution, its complex aftermath, and pathways toward acts of reparation. Our first session will take place on Zoom and feature a lecture and discussion about the unexpected victory of the enslaved people of Saint Domingue (now Haiti) over the French forces. We will dive more deeply into the Age of Revolution after services on January 17 (in person) through a discussion of Evelyne Trouillot's powerful and lyrical novel Désirée Congo, translated by our own Marjorie Salvodon. Our final session will provide an opportunity to engage with local community groups and activists to see how we might take part in the work of repair. Save the dates!

Professor René is an Haitian scholar, community activist and radio host-contributor on Haiti Focus, radio program on 88.1 FM (MIT Radio). He is also Director of the Haitian Creole Summer Institute at UMASS-Boston.
