Sukkot/Simchat Torah 5786

Sukkot is the "Festival of the Ingathering," the Biblical harvest holiday where we celebrate the abundance in our lives while remembering the precariousness of our ancestors' journey through the wilderness. The Sukkot week begins this year on Monday evening, October 6. On Sukkot, we build and eat our meals in the sukkah, wave the lulav and etrog at services, and are instructed to be joyous — here are some opportunities to do all three!

Blessings for erev Sukkot & dwelling in the sukkah

First Day Sukkot Morning Service

Tuesday, October 7, 10:00 am-12:00 pm
CDT Sukkah at the Temple Reyim Shared Campus, Auburndale (Rain plan: CDT Sanctuary)

Shake your lulav! Join Rabbi Toba for Sukkot morning services, featuring Hallel and a whole lotta lulav shaking (service is in-person only). We will be remembering CDT member Marianka May, and marking the second anniversary of October 7.

The sukkah is located on the right side of the Temple Reyim building, 1860 Washington Street — parking is available to the right when you enter the driveway, and follow the walkway down to the sukkah. Light Kiddush following services.

Trans Justice Gathering in the Sukkah!

Wednesday, October 8, 6:00-8:00 pm
Temple Reyim (1860 Washington St, Newton)

All are invited to join CDT’s Trans Justice group in the CDT sukkah for a vegetarian dinner (BYOF), discussion, and connection.

Erev Shabbat in the Sukkah

Friday, October 10, 6:30-9:00 pm
CDT Sukkah at the Temple Reyim Shared Campus (rain plan: Temple Reyim Chapel)

We will join together with the Temple Reyim community to welcome this special Shabbat of Sukkot! We'll begin outdoors in the Temple Reyim/Hebrew College sukkot with candle-lighting, Kiddush and a potluck vegetarian dinner (please bring a main dish or salad to share, enough for 6-8 people). Then we'll gather at 6:45 pm in the Reyim sanctuary for a musical Kabbalat Shabbat, with Rabbis Toba Spitzer and Daniel Berman. All are welcome — invite a friend!

Shabbat Chol Ha'mo'ed Sukkot

Saturday, October 11, 10:00 am-12:00 pm
CDT Sanctuary and Zoom

All are invited to join Rabbi Toba for this special Shabbat of the week of Sukkot, featuring the singing of Hallel! We will be remembering CDT members Efrem Goldberg, Marianka May, and Gordie Fellman on the occasion of their yahrzeits. Kiddush lunch to follow.

A Time for Study and A Time for Brunch

Sunday, October 12, 11:00 am-1:00 pm
CDT Sukkah (Temple Reyim shared campus, 1860 Washington St, Auburndale)

Each Jewish holiday is associated with a different special text. On Sukkot, we read Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), a classic wisdom that reflects on life's meaning, impermanence, and joy. Join Rabbi Beck in the CDT Sukkah for a relaxed morning of text study, discussion, and delicious brunch. Together, we'll explore this timeless (and timely) text in the open air of the sukkah, engaging with its questions and insights in community. Please register here so we know how many bagels to buy ;).

Simchat Torah Celebration

Monday, October 13, 7:00-9:00 pm
CDT (60 Highland St, West Newton)

Come celebrate as we close our year of Torah reading and re-roll the scroll to start again! We will gather at 7:00 pm for a fun evening service including Torah Quiz (prizes for kids and adults!), followed by dancing with the Torah scrolls and unrolling the Torah! Join Rabbi Toba and CDT musicians for a fun, musical evening.
