Discussion of "Désirée Congo" by Evelyne Trouillot

Saturday, January 17, 2026 28 Tevet 5786

12:45 PM - 2:15 PM60 Highland Street (in person only)

CDT's Undoing Racism group invites all members of CDT to a special three-part series on the Haitian Revolution, its complex aftermath, and pathways toward acts of reparation. At this session, we will dive more deeply into the Age of Revolution  through a discussion of Evelyne Trouillot's powerful and lyrical novel Désirée Congo, translated by our own Marjorie Salvodon, in conversation with Sue Lanser.

If you'd like some background knowledge of the Haitian Revolution, this 12-minute video provides a good overview. This timeline and interactive map might also be helpful. For those interested in a deeper dive, C.L.R. James's classic The Black Jacobins (1963) is available online, and here is a list of further reading that is an education in itself.
