Readings & Songs for Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Shabbat

As we begin the book of Exodus and the narrative of the Israelites' liberation from slavery, we are thrilled to welcome a special guest, the Reverend Quentin Cox, in an exploration of Dr. King's teachings. Rev. Cox will be speaking on Journeying Together Through Divided Times: A Prophetic Mandate for Modern Malaise:

"Reflecting on the timeless teachings of the prophet Micah and the enduring legacy of Dr. King, we will explore the sacred call to pursue justice rather than 'numbing out' and accepting a status quo riddled with inequity. Amid growing wealth disparity and political uncertainty, we will consider what it means to pause, reflect, and recommit ourselves to the work of tikkun olam — repairing the world. Rooted in our shared tradition of justice and compassion, we are called to actively confront systemic oppression and advocate for economic fairness as an expression of our covenant with the Divine. Together, we can continue Dr. King's work of eliminating poverty, securing peace, and building a world imbued with dignity and hope for all."

The Reverend Quentin Cox is a second-year social policy doctoral student at Brandeis University, focusing on leveraging community-based policymaking interventions to address the racial wealth gap. He holds a B.S. in Management from the U.S. Air Force Academy and an M.Div. Vanderbilt University. A former Air Force officer and retail leader, he founded the Center for Urban Economic Justice to combat the racial wealth gap by building Black economic power. His faith commitments, together with his military, corporate, and academic experiences, drive his life's work which is situated at the intersection of community, justice, and love.
