Reading for the first class - "Dropped From Heaven" excerpt

Reading for Class #2

For Jews living in the United States, the term “Jewish Literature” might bring to mind a wide variety of American, European, and Israeli authors. And yet even that variety understates the diversity of the Jewish literary world. In fact, the many nations of Asia, South America, and Africa have produced a variety of remarkable Jewish writers of fiction and poetry who belong in any canon of Jewish literature. In this course we’ll engage a sample of that literature, aiming to broaden our view of the Jewish world, of literature, and of approaches to reading. There will be some light advance reading (about the length of a short story) before each session.

David Ebenbach is a Professor of the Practice at Georgetown University, where he teaches creative writing and literature through their Center for Jewish Civilization and where he supports faculty and graduate students in their pedagogical development through Georgetown’s Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship. He is also the author of ten books of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction, winners of such awards as the Drue Heinz Literature Prize and the Juniper Prize, among others.
