Do you like movies? Do you enjoy watching and discussing Jewish films? Then gather with CDT members on Zoom to discuss thought- provoking Jewish films from around the world.
This month we are discussing Live and Become: Va, vis et deviens, the magnificent, epic story of an Ethiopian boy who is airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel in 1984 during Operation Moses. Shlomo is plagued by two big secrets: He is neither a Jew nor an orphan, just an African boy who survived and wants, somehow, to fulfill his Ethiopian mother’s parting request that he “go, live, and become.” Buoyed by a profound and unfaltering motherly love—both in his memory and in the arms of his adoptive mother—he ultimately finds an identity and a happiness all his own.
Winner of three awards at the Berlin International Film Festival. Winner of a César Award for Best Screenplay.
“The bounty of incident is balanced by knowing humor, compelling characters and a dedicated compassion toward those for whom the search for home sends their head, heart and feet flying in all directions.” —Robert Abele, Los Angeles
Everyone is welcome to attend one or all films. Films can be watched or rented on a variety of platforms, including Kanopy (free through most public libraries). The film and meeting details will be sent to the group’s mailing list. To join the list, offer film suggestions, or ask questions, please contact Emily Sper at filmclub@dorsheitzedek.org.
