Afghan Family Resettlement at CDT

Updates

We are looking for new family liaisons! If you have a flexible schedule and are looking for a very meaningful volunteer opportunity, click here to learn more about becoming a liaison with the Afghan family we are supporting.

Overview

Many Afghans had to flee their country on short notice and are now arriving in the Boston area. The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and Catholic Charities are working with area mosques, churches, and synagogues to support a resettlement effort. CDT has come forward to help the resettlement of an Afghan family.

Supporting an Afghan family aligns with our core values at CDT.  We could not support this family without the support of you, our kehillah (community).  We embody chesed (lovingkindness), offering emotional and physical support to a family who has gone through major trauma.  It is a mitzvah, connecting us not only to each other, but also acknowledging our connection to those outside our immediate community.  And finally, it is an opportunity for our youth in our religious school to collaborate with the larger community in this act of tikkun olam (repair of the world).  Supporting an Afghan family is a concrete way we can live out our responsibility to our broader community.

The family of four arrived in Boston on December 21st and are settling into their new home, with the incredible support of our greeter team of four, as well as a case manager from Catholic Charities. For reasons of safety we can not share any identifying information about the family. Please read the 'Family's Safety' on the right sidebar of this page for more information in this regard. Thank you to all of you who have made this effort possible; this could never have been realized without the gracious support of the CDT and HBT communities.

Ways to Contribute

  • Sign up to volunteer in both one-time ways and ongoing ways. Please fill out this form to see the options and share your interest in various types of volunteer possibilities. We encourage all those interested in volunteering to watch the recording of 'Welcoming Afghan Refugees: Understanding Cultural Strengths and Needs of Recent Arrivals' above if you were unable to attend the live event.

  • Donate household items. Welcome Home, a home goods pantry in Newton, MA  providing kitchen, bath and bedding items, is partnering with CDT to supply household goods to our family and other resettling Afghan families. To donate your household goods to Welcome Home, please use this link or email welcomehomemass@gmail.com.  Welcome Home will then supply these items to our family.  Excess items may also go to other Afghan families settling in Massachusetts.

  • Learn more about needed financial support on this page.

  • We have partnered with the Big Sister Big Brother Foundation. They have provided financial support to the family in exchange for CDT hosting a clothing/shoe bin for donations in our parking lot. Please support this by dropping off clean, used clothing and shoes to donate.
